This week’s poser is taken from the judicial rentals in the Callander Barony Court records.  (National Archives of Scotland, RH11/10/1/30).

The handwriting is fairly clear. There are a few secretary hand letters in it and a couple of measurements which may be unfamiliar. There is also an example of a jaj date, a few instances of words spelled phonetically.

The Scots word rests in line 5 means owing or in arrears. There are also two interesting abbreviations beside the last two signatures. The abbreviation beside the signature of John Campbell is cl[er]k, we believe the B next to the signature of Alexander Watt is an abbreviation of his role of Baillie.

This week’s question: What does Robert Callander pay in total in yearly rent and what is the date?
