The Scottish Archive Network was set up in August 1999. Its aim was to create an electronic network and search room linking the catalogues of over 50 Scottish archives and to provide a range of additional electronic services including a Knowledge Base of frequently asked questions on Scottish history, exhibitions, publications, education modules and research tools to enhance and encourage the use of Scottish archives.

The project is funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), the Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU) and the National Archives of Scotland (NAS).

For more information about the Scottish Archive Network (SCAN) go to the SCAN website.

In addition, the Scottish Archive Network has created a computerised index to the wills of Scots from 1500 to 1901, linked to digital images of the wills, opening up a vast historical resource. These indexes and images are now available on the ScotlandsPeople website.
